Getting Started
What is FoodAte?
FoodAte is a calorie-sharing social app that lets you snap photos of your meals, get instant AI-powered calorie and nutritional estimates, log your food diary, discover restaurants, track spending, and share your food journey with friends and the FoodAte community.
How do I create an account?
Download FoodAte from the App Store or Google Play, open the app, and follow the on-screen steps to sign up. You can register using your email address or sign in with Apple / Google for a faster setup.
Is FoodAte free to use?
Yes, FoodAte has a generous free tier that covers meal snapping, calorie diary logging, restaurant discovery, and basic spending tracking. A premium subscription unlocks advanced analytics, unlimited photo storage, and exclusive social features.
Which devices are supported?
FoodAte is available on iOS (iPhone and iPad, iOS 15+) and Android (Android 10 and above). A web version is planned for a future release.
Calorie Tracking
How does the calorie estimation work?
When you snap a photo of your meal, FoodAte's AI model analyses the image — identifying food items, portion sizes, and preparation methods — to estimate total calories and macronutrients (protein, carbs, fat). The more clearly the food is visible in the photo, the more accurate the estimate tends to be.
How accurate are FoodAte's calorie estimates?
Our AI model is trained on millions of food images and achieves strong accuracy for common dishes. However, no automated system is perfect — estimates can vary based on portion size, ingredients, and preparation. For clinical or medical purposes, always consult a qualified healthcare professional.
Can I log meals without a photo?
Absolutely. You can manually enter meal details (food name, quantity, brand) in the diary tab. You can also save frequent meals as presets for quicker logging.
Can I use FoodAte if I have dietary restrictions or allergies?
Yes. In your profile settings, you can set dietary preferences (vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, nut-free, dairy-free, halal, kosher) and allergies. While FoodAte does not yet provide allergen warnings, this information helps personalise your experience and diary entries.
Social Features
How do I share a meal post?
After snapping and analysing a meal, tap the share icon in the analysis screen. Choose whether to share it to your FoodAte followers, a specific group, or just save it privately to your diary. You can also enable auto-sharing to your connected social accounts.
Can I follow other users?
Yes. Visit any user's public profile and tap the 'Follow' button. You'll see their shared meals in your feed. Users can also make their accounts private, in which case you must send a follow request.
How do weekly challenges work?
Each week FoodAte hosts community challenges (e.g., 'Highest Protein Week', 'Most Diverse Meals'). Participation is automatic — just keep logging your meals. At the end of the week, top performers earn badges and exclusive rewards.
Can I control who sees my meals?
Yes. In your privacy settings you can set your default post visibility to Public, Followers Only, or Private. Individual posts can also have their visibility adjusted before publishing. Your full calorie diary is always private.
Account & Data
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings → Account → Delete Account within the FoodAte app. This permanently removes your profile, diary entries, and personal data within 30 days in line with our Privacy Policy. Public posts may remain accessible as we cannot retract third-party copies.
Where can I download my data?
You can request a full export of your FoodAte data (diary, meal photos, spending logs) at any time from Settings → Privacy & Data → Export My Data. We'll prepare a ZIP file with your data in JSON and CSV formats within 48 hours.
How do I change my email or password?
Navigate to Settings → Account to update your email, password, or linked social accounts. For security, changing your password requires you to confirm your current password first.
Does FoodAte sell my data?
No. FoodAte does not sell your personal information or meal data to advertisers or third parties. We monetise through optional premium subscriptions and sponsored restaurant placements that are clearly labelled as ads. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Restaurant & Spending
How does the restaurant discovery feature work?
FoodAte shows restaurants near you based on your location. Each restaurant page includes community-submitted calorie data for popular dishes, average meal costs, and real user reviews. You can also add your own meal entries when visiting a restaurant.
How do I track my food spending?
In the Spending tab, tap '+' to log a purchase. Enter the amount and optionally associate it with a meal entry from your diary. Over time, FoodAte builds spending charts so you can see trends by day, week, and month.
Can I export my spending data?
Yes. From the Spending tab, tap the export icon to download your spending history as a CSV or PDF report, perfect for budgeting or tax purposes.
